About Tezos

Tezos is a blockchain network that went live with its mainnet in September of 2018. In order to fund the project, Tezos conducted one of the most successful initial coin offerings of all time, raising $232 million in a 2017 token sale. The native asset of the Tezos blockchain are “tezzies”, usually referred to with the ticker “XTZ”.

Key features of Tezos:

  • The Tezos mainnet was launched in 2018
  • Tezos uses a proof-of-stake consensus model
  • Tezos has can be upgraded without hard forks and features on-chain governance

The Tezos blockchain uses a Proof-of-Stake model to achieve consensus. The users who maintain the Tezos network by staking their XTZ are referred to as “bakers”, while the staking process is called “baking”. Users can perform baking themselves or delegate it to others.

Multiple cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance and Coinbase, have enabled support for XTZ baking. This means that even the users who hold their funds on supported exchanges can receive rewards from baking that is done on their behalf by exchanges.

The Tezos platform supports smart contract functionality and uses a programming language called Michelson, which enables formal verification. The project’s aim is to provide an infrastructure that is robust enough for high value use cases. Indeed, Tezos has managed to gain traction in the nascent industry of tokenized securities.

However, the most unique aspect of the Tezos blockchain are its governance properties. The Tezos protocol can be upgraded without the blockchain having to undergo a hard fork. This feature makes updating the Tezos protocol a more efficient process in comparison to many of its competitors.

The Tezos protocol consists of three main layers: the network layer, the transaction layer and the consensus layer. Tezos also features on-chain governance, where all XTZ holders can participate in the decision-making process.

FAQ

What is Tezos?

Tezos is a decentralized blockchain platform that can change itself through on-chain governance. The Tezos protocol is capable of updating itself without requiring a hard fork. The Tezos blockchain also utilizes smart contracts and allows creation of decentralized applications (Dapps) on top of it. The native cryptocurrency of the Tezos platform is the XTZ token.

Tezos launched their ICO on July 14, 2017 and raised $232 million, making it one of the best-funded crypto and blockchain projects at the time. However, the early stages of the project were plagued with controversy, with the project’s founders Arthur and Kathleen Breitman having a serious dispute with the Tezos Foundation, a Switzerland-based non profit organization that controlled the funds raised during the ICO. The dispute came to an end after Johann Gevers stepped down as president of the Tezos Foundation, and the Tezos mainnet was eventually launched in September of 2018.

How does Tezos work?

Tezos functions similarly to other blockchains, with some changes to their system. They use a modified version of the Delegated Proof of Stake (DPOS) mechanism called Liquid Proof of Stake (LPOS). The difference is that with DPOS you have to vote for block producers on the network in order to maintain consensus on the network, while with LPOS, this is optional and you are free to stake yourself or delegate to someone else. The nodes on the Tezos network that publish blocks are called ‘bakers’.

Tezos also created a new way to make changes on their blockchain. Developers can suggest changes or upgrades for the Tezos protocol, and if the suggestion is approved by the community and implemented, developers get rewarded with XTZ tokens. The Tezos platform also has algorithms which make sure that the key properties of the network are unchanged by upgrades. This system allows Tezos to adopt new technologies quickly.

How is Tezos used?

To use Tezos, you need to create an account and a wallet. Once that’s done, you can use all the features that their platform provides, such as performing transactions, staking XTZ tokens etc.

If you plan to develop DApps on the Tezos blockchain, you can find plenty of documentation, libraries and other resources on the Tezos Developer Portal.

How is Tezos different?

Tezos is striving to be an alternative to blockchains like Ethereum. Some of the platform’s unique features include the Liquid Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism, the Michelson smart contracts language, on-chain governance, and the ability to be upgraded without requiring a fork. Tezos encourages developer participation by rewarding developers with XTZ tokens if they submit ideas that get approved by the community.

Why are XTZ tokens valuable?

XTZ tokens are valuable for a few reasons. First of all, they give you the right to vote on any changes suggested to be implemented on the Tezos platform. The second is that you are entitled for rewards if you stake your XTZ tokens.

When it comes to staking XTZ tokens, you actually have a few options on how to do that. The first option is to stake them on the Tezos platform. You need to set up a node and have a minimum of 8,000 XTZ tokens. This can be too high of a bar for many investors, but alternatives are available.

The second option is to delegate your tokens to someone else on the platform and have them stake your tokens for you in exchange for a fee. For this, you only need to have a few XTZ tokens and a wallet compatible with their platform.

The easiest option would be to stake your tokens through an exchange like Binance. While they will be staking your tokens for you, it isn’t the same as a delegation system because the exchange will be in control of your keys. This is a concern that a lot of users have, so it will depend on how much you value the convenience of staking through an exchange.

Is XTZ a good investment?

XTZ is one of the largest cryptocurrencies on the market right now and their ecosystem could grow even more in the future. However, the crypto market is very volatile and nothing is ever certain. If you do choose to invest in XTZ, make sure that you don’t invest more than you’re willing to lose.

How do I get XTZ tokens?

You can buy XTZ tokens on most crypto exchanges. Not a lot of them offer the option to buy them with fiat currencies, so the best option would be to get some Bitcoin and Ethereum, and then trade those in for some XTZ.

Once you have XTZ tokens, you can earn more by staking them on their platform or some other exchange like Binance.

What is the current price of XTZ tokens?

On , the price of an XTZ token is .

How many XTZ tokens are left?

There are currently XTZ tokens on the market, with tokens available.

Is XTZ safe?

XTZ is deemed safe to use by the community. So far, they didn’t have any large attacks that compromised their network, and the LPOS system adds some extra security. Of course, no cryptocurrency is ever completely safe, so we advise you to do your own research on their platform if you intend to use it.

Is Tezos legal?

Countries around the world are slowly starting to allow the use of crypto in their system, but their legal status still varies. To find out which countries allow the use of cryptocurrency, click here.

Where can you store XTZ tokens?

You can store XTZ tokens in a whole host of different cryptocurrency wallets. On the official Tezos website, you can find a list of Tezos wallets. It’s also possible to store your XTZ tokens in a hardware wallet, for example the devices created by Ledger and Trezor.

How do you cash out XTZ tokens?

To cash out on your XTZ tokens, you need to use an exchange where XTZ tokens are listed. XTZ is listed on many exchanges, but not all of them offer the option to trade XTZ for fiat currencies. So, the best course of action might be to trade your XTZ tokens for some BTC or ETH, and then trade those coins in for some fiat currencies.

Are Tezos transaction fees high?

Tezos transaction fees are relatively low. However, the platform does have some staking fees, which can vary depending on how you choose to stake.
